Walnut is exceptionally stable and durable, which explains why so many pieces of antique furniture made from Walnut have managed to outlive other furniture pieces. It is hard, dense, and resistant to scratches, while its oily nature makes it stain resistant. Walnut is very elastic with great shock resistance. As a counter top or kitchen island top, it will greatly attenuate the clatter and other noises associated with kitchen activities. Like cherry wood, it develops eventually a rich patina that adds further value to the wood.
